Frequently asked questions
Where is my data stored?
On your device, in the app's private storage area. Nothing is uploaded to a server we control. If you delete the app, your data is permanently erased.
Do I need an account?
No. Caltopia has no account system, no sign-up, no cloud sync. You start using the app right after onboarding.
Does Caltopia work offline?
Almost everything works offline: logging, viewing trends, achievements, water and weight tracking, custom foods, meal templates, and Apple Health sync. The two things that need internet are food search by name (which queries public food databases) and barcode lookup. If you're offline, you can still log foods you've already added or create custom foods.
How do I delete a logged meal / water / weight entry?
Swipe left on the entry in the appropriate tab (Food, Water, or Weight). A red Delete button appears — tap it.
How do I change my calorie or macro goals?
Settings → Goals. You can edit each target directly, or tap "Calculate from Profile" to recompute based on your body stats, activity level, and goal type using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation.
How do I reset everything?
The fastest way is to delete and reinstall the app — this clears all stored data. To reset just gamification (XP, streaks, achievements) while keeping food/weight logs, go to Settings → Reset → Reset Gamification Progress.
Why is the barcode scanner not finding my product?
We query Open Food Facts, which is a public, community-maintained database. It has great coverage in Europe and growing coverage in the US, but not every barcode is in it. When that happens, tap "Create Custom Food" to add the product yourself — and consider contributing the barcode back to Open Food Facts.
The voice logger transcribed my words wrong
Voice transcription uses Apple's Speech framework. Accuracy depends on noise level, accent, and the speed at which you talk. Speak clearly with a short pause between items: "two scrambled eggs… one slice of whole wheat toast… coffee with milk." You can also edit any logged entry after the fact.
How do streaks and streak freezes work?
Your logging streak counts consecutive days with at least one food log. Every 7-day streak earns you a "freeze" (up to 3 banked). If you miss exactly one day, a freeze is auto-applied so your streak survives. Miss two days in a row and the streak resets to 1.
How does Apple Health sync work?
Off by default. Turn it on in Settings → Apple Health. iOS will ask permission for each data type. When on, foods, water, and weight you log in Caltopia write to Apple Health (only data types you grant), and Caltopia pulls your latest weight from Health on first connect. You can revoke at any time from Apple Health settings.
Is the calorie/macro math accurate?
Caltopia uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation for BMR (the most accurate general-population formula per the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) and standard activity multipliers from the Institute of Medicine. Individual metabolism varies, so treat targets as a starting point and adjust based on real results. See Settings → Sources & Methodology for full citations.
Caltopia is giving me food anxiety
Please stop using the app and talk to a healthcare provider. Tracking is a tool, not a goal. If you have or have had an eating disorder, please use Caltopia only under professional guidance. NEDA helpline (US): 1-800-931-2237.
Is this medical advice?
No. Caltopia is a wellness self-tracking tool. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before changing your diet, exercise, or medication.
